Why is it important to maintain a good social media etiquette

This is just one of those questions that you can probably put in the category of “Why is it important you brush your teeth every night?” The answer is, “Because it is good for you!” It’s such a no-brainer that it’s surprising how many people use social media not to show off their best sides, but their worst. Social media is just like any other human social interaction. Just because you are sitting behind a computer screen, invisible to the people you are interacting with does not mean you are really invisible.

The fact is you are still talking to real people, not machines, and it is always a good idea to be polite and respectful to people in any situation, even if you don’t agree with what they are saying. There are ways to get your point across without trolling, cursing or using bad language. And social media leaves a trail. You don’t want to say something now that you will regret later, especially because even if you delete your comment or change your point of view, the comment will probably still be saved on some remote server somewhere on the web, extractable by people who know how to do these things. And tomorrow if you make it big, become a billionaire celebrity (and yes, who hasn’t dreamed of that), then these things could just come back to bite you.

But it isn’t even that, really. It’s basic humanity. Why would you want to be rude when you needn’t be? Especially on social media, where you are connected not with strangers alone over cute, little aliases on forums or tweets, but also with family, friends, co workers, bosses, employees, potential clients and what have you.

Social media, for all its vastness, is a small world. Linkedin has shown us that. And if you develop a reputation for being a nutcase over the internet, then word will spread fast and believe us, when word spreads through social media, it is very difficult to change people’s perception. It may not be how you are in real life – for all we know, you are a very sweet person, mindful of everyone’s feelings around you – but online, with the shield of a screen, strange things can happen. Don’t come across as over-bearing, as a know-it-all, as a flirt, a troller, a cheap-jokes kind of person and all the other things your mom would disapprove of.

An identity on social media is not one identity – in many cases, it becomes your defining identity, your first impression for people, your only identity. Now, would you want to have it come across as nice? This doesn’t mean you become a crowd pleaser, of course, no one likes that. Just be yourself. And be confident of that. And if you really are someone who is a little obnoxious, then try not to let that show online where it can damage your image faster than you can blink, and where friends and family won’t be willing to make excuses for your behavior.

  1. Most people probably don’t know how good social media can be for their business if they don’t know how to apply good etiquette, and many don’t realize how effective social media is. Without a way of measuring the success of social media, they are blindly using that form of communication without realizing the effect it has with their customers.

    • I agree..Thanks Becca for the comment..Social Media is like an extension of what you are..A lot of things are done online now a days and we should protect ourselves online just like how we should do it on our everyday lives, to gain more credibility as a person.

  2. In many cases, your Internet Media Identity, can be very different from your real one. Cause many ppl tend to hide their real way of being, just to feel like another person for a while. Internautical life is so different from the real one!

    • @Agentii : Good point. People do that, pretending to be another person. 11. Great tips! Social Media is the way to connect with people and it can be also a source of feedback from your customer. Some feedback may not be good but always see to it that you are polite in responding to all inquiries.
