Tips to Build a Central Cloud Desktop in your Home

Usage of computing resources such as hardware and software services over the network is called as Cloud Computing. It is a complex infrastructure that resembles the shape of a cloud in the system diagram. The cloud services can be an essential part of a business, which can reduce the investment on both hardware and software along with the current expenses. Many organizations around the world have started to use Cloud computing services extensively. Still, you are bound to find people who are skeptical about its use. The main reason behind their reluctance is security of the information.

With the cloud concept you can store your files and information on the internet and share it with friends anywhere in the world. There is another way to make a good use of this cloud concept- in your home. By setting a central cloud system in your house, you can access the same information from any computer. To set up a central cloud system, eyeOS   is the best cloud desktop solution.

This cloud is very different from the real cloud concept as there is a limitation on who can access it. This concept is contained within a house. All one needs is a laptop with minimum hard drive space, but with a good RAM and a good browser. Another requirement would be a good powerful server that may contain a processor, loads of drive space and lots of RAM memory. When eyeOS is installed on the server, clients would be able to connect with the help of just a browser. eyeOS is best intended for places such as schools and business to maintain control over its usage.

eyeOS Setup:

Installing eyeOS is the main process behind setting up the cloud system at home. Below the step by step process of installing eyeOS has been discussed detail.

Step 1:

Download extensions such as PHP and mySQL files in the eyeOS folder available in the root web directory. Type the following address in the URL “http:// your-server-IP/eyeOS /install/”. A window titled “Checking for eyeOS requirements” will appear which displays the number of installed and uninstalled extensions. All the items would be displayed in three different colors – red, green and yellow. Red indicates those items that need to be installed. Green indicates those items that are already installed. Yellow indicates items that are not installed but are optional.

Step 2:

After the installation a new database has to be created.  Go to phpmyadmin on the server and configure the database. The database configuration page would have four blank spaces to be filled namely MySQL host, MySQL database,    MySQL username and MySQL password.

 Step 3:

After the successful installation, type “http://your-server-IP/eyeOS/ “ to get access to the login screen. The login screen consists of two blank spaces to provide username and password. Apart from that another option “create an account” is also provided. Any member trying to connect to the server for the first time would have to create an account. They can have their own username and password to login into the server. On successful login they would be greeted by cloud desktop inside the browser window.

The installation process is over and it is now important to configure and manage files and folders on the server according to your liking. It is good to set up the launch of eyeOS in a full screen mode while on booting to have a feel and look of a regular computer. The start menu is available at the top left corner of the screen. On clicking, all the applications included in the virtual PC would be displayed. The folders that are displayed are actually stored in the server. They are shown as a personal folder till the session expires. To save files and documents in the word format, OpenOffice extension has to be installed.

There is a separate website where hundreds of applications compatible with eyeOS are available. These apps may vary from Windows 7 theme to other multimedia theme apps. It would take less than half an hour to set up a home cloud system provided, the server is readily available. Time has come to introduce family members to the easy and fun ways of cloud computing concept.
