Over the past year we have seen video chat applications rise considerably in popularity. Along with this rise in popularity, several new applications have come on the scene, and some older applications have gotten some face lifts to their user interfaces and new interoperability or cross platform functionality.
ooVoo
Last month, the video chat service ooVoo, whose name represents two eyes looking at each other through the “V”ideo connecting them, announced its new offering through Facebook. Through the new Facebook app, Facebook users can connect with up to twelve other ooVoo users in a video conference. The basic application is free, but if users wish to upgrade to the premium version can enjoy screen sharing capability. ooVoo is available for several other formats, including iPad and Android, as well as the traditional web interface. ooVoo users connecting via Facebook can also video conference with users from other the other available application platforms as well. Along with the new Facebook integration, ooVoo users on any platform can now log in to the application via their credentials in Facebook or Twitter, as well as the traditional email method. ooVoo has been wildly successful among the younger crowd. In fact, sixty percent of ooVoo’s user base is under twenty five. Most teenage users utilize ooVoo for doing homework together, watching television together, or just for the constant “on” connection they share with their friends over live video feed.
Google Hangouts
Google Hangouts, the new video chat application available in Google Plus, has a unique approach to video chat that it hopes will attract many new users to the Google Plus platform from existing portals like Facebook and MySpace. While Google does not offer support for quite as many simultaneous video chat participants as ooVoo (Google Hangouts allows for nine simultaneous users as opposed to ooVoo’s 12 participant limit on Facebook), Google Hangouts does allow for screen sharing in its free version. In fact, it also allows application sharing and several games and cooperative applications that are currently available such as Poker and Google Docs. Google Hangout features an open API and encourages developers to create new collaborative games. The expected user base for Google Hangout seems to be targeted at the same user base as ooVoo, that is, students and young adults.
Skype
Compared to ooVoo and Google Hangout, Skype seems to be the older, stodgier brother. Skype was one of the first successful video conferencing applications, and its voice over IP solutions made it very attractive to businesses seeking a cheaper and more convenient alternative to traditional telecoms and it also attracted family and friends spread out across seas, military families for instance. Skype offers a very stable and robust set of application and screen sharing features, and is a favorite among professionals sharing a common virtual whiteboard. The main drawback to Skype in comparison to ooVoo over Facebook, however, is that Skype is not integrated into a major portal such as Facebook, Google Plus, or Myspace.
Chatroulette
Chatroulette is an interesting application that allows users to video chat randomly with each other. The user interface consists of two streaming video windows and two text chat windows. If the user wishes to leave the current conversation, she can push a button and a new random user will be connected. While this is an interesting application, it has been accepted in the user community as something of a novelty and, like Skype, is not integrated into a major social media portal.
Chatroulette does, however, attempt to solve a rather interesting challenge in social media – the ability to not just connect with friends and family over video, but also to find new people. Google Plus Circles may help Google Hangout to address this challenge easier than ooVoo over the next few months, but it will be hard for Google Hangout to compete for users against ooVoo with its new Facebook integration.
