Apple iPhone and iPad to Get Face Unlock

The newest version of Google’s Android known as Ice Cream Sandwich has brought a lot of nice innovations to Android-based phones, Face Unlock being among the most interesting ones of them. No slide-to-unlock any more – you should just have a look at your phone’s screen, and the front camera scans your face and unlocks the phone. This cool technology is already available on Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus, HTC’s One X and other phones running Android 4.0, and now it’s said to come to Apple’s iPhone and iPad, too!

According to patent documentation shown by the USPTO this week, Apple is now working on a similar technology that will work as Android’s one. The patent filed in September 2010 was credited to John E. Arthur.

Apple seems to wish to go further than Google and arm its new system with features ICS’s Face Unlock doesn’t have. For example, when the user looks at the camera of the phone and their face is recognized, the phone can not only unlock, but also perform some tasks. It can, say, open the email account of the user, turn on music or anything that was predefined for that very face. With this new technology, Apple’s devices will also be able to adjust the orientation of the screen according to the user’s face or to lock the device if it doesn’t see the familiar face for a certain period of time.

By the way, this is not the first time that we’re hearing about a Face Unlock technology for Apple’s devices. In 2010 there were rumors that they wanted to make the iPad’s camera recognize users’ faces – this way the whole family would be able to use the device. But as you could have guessed, that time Apple didn’t manage to implement this kind of thing in its tablet. Let’s hope they’ll do it this time, since this technology will surely help Apple compete with Samsung and their upcoming Galaxy S3.

Unfortunately, we don’t know anything else about Apple’s upcoming Face Unlock feature. Will it come as a built-in feature in the iPhone 5? Will it go to the older iPhones with an upcoming software update? This remains to be seen yet.
